I think its a waste of time. Making it legal won't help. A lot of people who smoke also do other drugs as well. It's not like druggies make this the drug of choice, its a drug of availability.
I've smoked marijuana in the past, and as such have several friends who have and some who still do. Very few of these friends have tried any other illegal substances, and even fewer have done so repeatedly.
If you think making marijuana legal won't have any effect, just turn on the news, go looking for drug related news stories. I guarantee most will be about marijuana. I rarely hear reports about drugs raids that have found marijuana and other substances. If marijuana became legal, think of all the money that could be saved in law enforcement. Now quite a few people would say, "then why not make everything legal and get rid of the police completely?", but that's blowing it out of proportion. Smoking marijuana may cause health risks, to the person smoking it. There should be programs available to help people stop, to convince them of the risks, but we should have the freedom to do as we please as long as it's only ourselves that will get hurt.
Plus you've got to consider that making marijuana legal might be an incentive for people not to try other drugs, since they are still illegal and a good, legal 'high' is available. Although personally I believe all drugs should be legalised. Even the ones I wouldn't want any of the people I know taking. I don't think the law should be used to protect us from things we choose to do to ourselves.
